An example of each of these precipitating factors will be highlighted below, followed by suggested strategies to deescalate meltdowns.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d7ecec elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0d7ecec\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This short video, produced by the National Autistic Society, simulates an experience of sensory overwhelm, to encourage perspective-taking.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c70f166 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c70f166\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Imagine you are looking down at the problem from a helicopter to reveal a broader picture. During a meltdown, while it may appear in the immediate situation that a child is reacting inflexibly to a request, it is likely an accumulation of experiences (e.g., a transition that was unexpected, numerous situations that the child could not understand because their brain processes things differently, sensory overwhelm, etc.)<div class='yrm-content yrm-content-1 yrm-content-hide  ' id='yrm-tK64n' data-id='1' data-show-status='false' data-after-action='' style=\"visibility: hidden;height: 0;\">\n\t\t\t<div id='yrm-inner-content-yrm-tK64n' class='yrm-inner-content-wrapper yrm-cntent-1'>that eventuated in the child feeling that they have used up all-of their coping responses in their repertoire, including seeking help. Often, the child will be requesting things in-the-midst of a meltdown. You will likely escalate the meltdown if you continue to reason with or make demands of the child. When explaining this to clients in therapy, I\u2019ll often use the metaphor of trying to pour water into a cup that is already full. data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If an Autistic child has reached the point of experiencing a meltdown, ignore the task at hand. During a meltdown, the child will be unable to respond appropriately (e.g, reason, reflect, learn) due to a dysregulated brain state. Do not constrain the child unless they are a danger to themselves or others.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-02f2e2e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"02f2e2e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the moment, it is crucial to relate to the child with emotional attunement. Emotional attunement is described as an ability to recognise, understand, and engage with the child\u2019s emotional state and respond with appropriate language (validate the feeling) and behaviours (share a sense of calm and connection).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0bfa537 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0bfa537\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEmotional dismissal and\/or misattunement are crippling for Autistic children who cannot easily bypass contempt and strongly need a deep and authentic connection. (To learn more, please refer to this visual representation of the work of pioneering neuroscientist<b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurosequential.com\/\">Dr Bruce Perry <\/a><\/b>, Sequential Engagement &#038; Processing \u2013 that highlights the importance of helping the child to regulate (calm their stress responses), and connecting through a relational approach, before reasoning.)\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3ba2cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b3ba2cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tProvide a calm environment by reducing sensory stimulation. It is important to reiterate that words are a form of stimulation. If you cannot provide a calm environment (e.g. you cannot create silence in the classroom) act like a GPS to navigate the child towards a location that allows them to experience a sensory break, with a continual focus on emotional attunement.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-81d88d6 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"81d88d6\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6a9c7f9\" data-id=\"6a9c7f9\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-46adcd5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"46adcd5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When you make the wrong turn in your car, the machine doesn\u2019t continue to focus on the wrong turn; rather, it directs you where to go next: \u201cNow, turn left at the next intersection.\u201d In such circumstances, navigate the child toward what to do next by giving them a sense of purpose or utilising a grounding technique (e.g. feed the chickens, take an important note to the principal, help return a book to the library, go for a walk to get a cold drink).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-34086e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"34086e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For example, say to the child, \u201cLet\u2019s take a break and go together to feed the chickens.\u201d The child may try and pull you back into discussing the problem; explicitly state in a calm, compassionate tone, \u201cI can see you were feeling (angry, sad, etc.). I know it\u2019s hard, I am here \u2014let\u2019s take a break and go together to feed the chickens.\u201d Physical exercise, in particular, is very effective in reducing physiological symptoms and removes the child from the situation (e.g., skipping to go to do an errand with the child).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-578764c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"578764c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When an Autistic child has faced a distressing situation that they could not resolve, repeated exposures without intervention may do more harm than good. You must address the symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Wait to find more workable options and provide coping skills (e.g., a social story of what is expected) at later date. Change is a process that requires preparation (considering developmental and therapeutic gains) and support (accommodations).
